How To Choose Your Trip-Sitter: The Basics
A trip-sitter is someone who accompanies you during your psychedelic experience. The most common reason for this is that some people are more susceptible to intense hallucinations or feelings of paranoia than others, and it’s always good to have someone there in case things get overwhelming.
In this blog post, we’ll go over the basics of what you should look for when choosing a trip-sitter so that your experience can be as enjoyable as possible!
Mind Your Company
Other humans are probably the #1 cause for a bad trip. Do not trip with people you don’t know. Do not trip with people you don’t like. Do not trip with people that stress you out. Period. Of course, this doesn’t apply to veteran psychonauts, who often go to concerts and festivals under the influence.
However, someone you do like and trust can bring you incomparable comfort during your trip. Often referred to as a trip sitter, this person will make sure you don’t harm yourself during your trip and help ground you back to reality when you wander off too far and get frightened.
Many claim your trip buddy should be sober, but that is not necessary. We think having a sober person watching you make a fool of yourself for hours can actually cause some subconscious shame and negative feelings. No matter how little, it can taint your experience.
They should, however, not be tripping. Instead, have your trip buddy microdose, smoke joints or drink a few beers while they hang out with you.
The term trip-sitter implies an authoritative figure watching over you, but that’s not what you want during a trip. You just need a lucid friend’s presence. The ideal candidate will:
- Help you breathe if you get a panic attack
- Take care of your valuables, so you don’t lose them
- Keep you company while you’re in a vulnerable state of mind
- Keep the entertainment going (music, movies, etc.)
- Make sure you remember to stay hydrated
- Be a reassuring presence during a bad trip
- Not mess with you by making loud noises or grand gestures
- Help you put on your pants if they fall off
Next time, it’s their turn to eat mushrooms, and you be the trip-sitter!
